To Fix the World - Stick Your Neck Out

The curriculum, now being used in over 500 schools is ideal for middle school kids and older. Over 500 pages, it is recommended for kids in day schools, religious schools, camps and youth groups, though the pre-bar/bat mitzvah is particularly good. are also. Some people using the curriculum have referred to it as a "Tzedakah resource" for the entire congregation. Many chapters are suitable for adult education, sermons, social action committees. There are many different parts of the curriculum and you, as the teacher, may pick those that are relevant to your class. (i.e. a day school might be more interested in the textual parts of the curriculum). It is not meant to be used sequentially.

A comprehensive outline shows 40 chapters contained in five units. Each chapter is comprised of three parts, and it is text-based with many suggested project ideas.

The profile of an individual who is designated a Giraffe or Mitzvah hero-someone, an ordinary person, whose efforts in tikun olam are related to the chapter topic.

Based upon the model of the original Giraffe curriculum which uses stories of specific people, many mitzvot will be discussed and students will be encouraged to complete specific activities that relate directly to the mitzvah. Some of the mitzvot found in the curriculum are: Lashone Harah, Shalom Bayit, Bal Tashchit, Kvod Hamet. There is also a section on specific holidays and the Tzedakah/mitzvot associated with them.

The introductory unit discusses the concepts of "what is the difference between a hero and a celebrity”, Brit, Mitzvah and Tzedakah.

The curriculum is presented in a three-ring binder that includes the teacher's copy and the student copy. You are given permission to copy the student lessons as needed. The teacher's copy is identical to the students except that the answers and points for discussion are in the margins.

Several chapters utilize clips from secular videos. Time signatures are included and the videos are readily available at video stores.

The curriculum costs $170 (plus $15 shipping and handling) and can be invoiced.
